Dravid axed, Back to the Future?

Finally the selectors met in Chennai, discussed and came up with a team for the first two matches of the upcoming India-Australia one day series and certainly there are no prizes for guessing that as always they have taken some really questionable ones as they say that the team has been selected looking at the future.
A 36 year old veteran, Dravid, was called back into the side so that he could provide some solidity when the team had to play on South African pitches and despite of him being the second highest run getter for India in the failed campaign of Champions Trophy, he has been shown the door when the team is back on the Indian pitches. It looks like as if BCCI and the selectors want to say that they would call him whenever they needed to strengthen their fort by making a solid Wall otherwise they were happy enough without that Wall. Is this the way one treats a senior and a world class player like Dravid? I don’t think so. I am not saying that he should be in the ODI side because he certainly does not fit in the schemes of the Indian team anymore. What I am saying is just that he should have been treated in a better way and he certainly deserves that for the kind of stature he has.
Yusuf Pathan has not done very well in the limited opportunities given to him and in the Challenger Trophy too he did little to help his cause. His ouster was expected and quite justified too. Dinesh Karthik does not get a place in my team and the reasons for that I had given in my last article (Team India: The Weak Links) and his exclusion has shown that I was quite right. R.P.Singh, after good show in the IPL-II has got many chances, in the West Indies, Sri Lanka, Champions Trophy but leave alone taking wickets, he has not even looked like taking wickets. Zaheer Khan has started bowling in nets and given the current form of the Indian pace line up, the selectors would have eagerly wanted him back holding the new ball in his hands, still he made himself unavailable for the selection for he has planned to play a few domestic matches in order to get match fitness before he starts bowling for India. This is like a lesson for some of the players who hide their injuries and also their match fitness in order to play for India and end up giving less than 33%.
Munaf Patel put up an impressive show in the Challenger Trophy and replaced R.P.Singh in the team. I hope he is fully fit this time and does not have any niggles or injuries because he has had that kind of a record to hide his injuries. When fully fit, he is a really good bowler. Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh as expected are back in the side and with their inclusion Dhoni will not have to spend sleepless nights thinking about the opening combination and how to keep the score board moving in the middle part of the game. Virat Kohli did well enough in the Champions Trophy to retain his side but it is highly unlikely that he will get a chance with Yuvraj ,Raina and Dhoni being in the middle order.
The selectors always put up a few surprises and this time it was the sacking of Abhishek Nayar who was replaced by Ravindra Jadeja. Nayar played just a game in the Champions Trophy and neither looked very dull nor too impressive to me in his last outing moreover I feel only a single game is not enough to judge the abilities of a player at least I can’t. As far as Jadeja is concerned, it might be a Diwali gift for him because since he was shown the door after the T-20 World Cup and by the time he made his come back, I don’t think that he put up even a single knock which could deserve him his comeback. But yes he is quite a talent and I hope that he does well and uses this gifted opportunity to fullest.
Sudeep Tyagi, a new lad gets a reward for some good and consistent bowling in domestic cricket as well as in the Challenger Trophy and with his inclusion the pace line up reads as Ishant, Munaf, Nehra and Tyagi. The most vulnerable places would be of Ishant and Munaf and if anyone of them ventures poorly then Tyagi may fancy his chances. Harbhajan may not have been successful in the Champions Trophy but in Challenger Trophy he showed that on Indian wickets he is still a big force and it will not be that easy for any side to deal with him on Indian wickets. With him the onus in the spin department will be on Amit Mishra’s young but experienced shoulders who has become the first choice in the spin bowling after Harbhajan.
But unlike Jadeja, BCCI was not in a festive mood for Venky and Robin Singh, the coaches or I should say former coaches for the side for bowling and fielding respectively. They are sacked from their respective posts with immediate effect. There will be no new appointment for the Australian series but one may expect a new coach/coaches after that. If their sacking is justified or not that is a question of debate and I shall surely express my views regarding that in my upcoming articles. But for now I focus on the upcoming series. India have won all the bilateral series it has played in the 14 months or so and we hope for yet another victory with a much stronger side. Let us see how the things unfold.

Dear Arvind,
I don’t think it is a bad one bcz certainly he does not have fit in the current indian schemes and also he hs nt looked that fluent in the matches he played in SL and CT. But really the decision should have been taken in a better manner.A senior pro like him should not be treated like this. That is quite shameful on the parts of BCCI.

@Sumit

Agreeing with what U say.Yes, I saw that he was not able to time the strokes with perfection. Why do U forget that when others collapsed like a pack of cards, he remained there like a wall?

He is in the time after a very long time and therefore needs time to get back the lost touch. When current players are struggle to find form what was the need to drop Dravid on the same ground ?

Anyway, wish U and your family members Happy Deepavali.

Hello Sumit,

Sorry ! I wrote the last comment in a great hurry !!

The said match was with Pakistan in which Dravid got run out in the 42nd over !!

I beg to differ with your views in previous comment. Though I am not in mood to have any debate in this regard as I am involved in celebrations and also because I have no problem with Dravid’s rejection. Therefore,I have no problem with your views that justify his rejection.

On the contrary,I just need to say something about the impression that U wish to generate.

Well, we certainly need a ”wall” if we are talking about India.More so if we are bunch of youngsters who are yet not that capable to play with perfection in all circumstances and above all are technically flawed in their approach.

You say that we need someone ” who could keep the score board ticking”..In other words, it’s beyond the ability of Dravid to do so.More so because he is a ’wall’ ? .

Sorry !! You need to be bit more informed in this regard.

”On 14 February 2007, he became the sixth player in the history of world cricket and the third Indian, after Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, to score 10,000 runs in ODI cricket.”

”Dravid scored 619 runs in that four-match series against Australia at an average of 103.16 and won the man of the series award.”(Test Series Against Australia 2003-2004 season)

”Dravid was top run scorer in the 7th World Cup(1999), scoring 461 runs.”

”In one-dayers he has an average of 39.49, and a strike rate of 71.22.”

”As of 9 August, 2006, Dravid’s average in overseas Tests stood at 65.28 as against his overall Test average of 55.41, and his average for away ODI stands at 42.03 as against overall ODI average of 39.49. In matches that India has won, Dravid averages 78.72 in Tests and 53.40 in ODIs.”

”Dravid was involved in two of the largest partnerships in ODIs: a 318-run partnership with Sourav Ganguly, the first pair to combine for a 300-run partnership, and then a 331-run partnership with Sachin Tendulkar, which is the present world record.”

”Also, Dravid is the current world record holder for the highest percentage(%) contribution of runs scored in matches won under a single captain, where the captain has won more than 20 Tests.[35] In the 21 Test matches India won under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership, Dravid played his part in every single one of those wins, scoring at a record average of 102.84 and piling up an astonishing 2571 runs, with nine hundreds - three of them double-centuries - and ten fifties in 32 innings. He contributed nearly 23% of the total runs scored by India those 21 matches, which is almost one run out of every four runs the team scored.”(Test Matches)

”He was named one of the Wisden cricketers of the year 2000. Though primarily a defensive batsman,Dravid has scored 50 not out in 22 balls(Strike Rate-227.27)vs NewZealand in Hydrabad on 15 Nov,2003,second fastest 50 among Indians.Only Ajit Agarkar 67 of 21 balls is faster than Dravid.”

One gentleman has commented on the same aspect in a debate on a different site:

Markrand as you said Rahul Dravid is not an agressive batsman. It was true 6-7 years back but if you see Rahul Dravid’s ODI record of last few years you will find that his strike rate is almost equal to strike rate of Sachin Tendulkar and he has won lot of matches for India by providing solidity in the middle order. So if Sachin Tendulkar is consider then why not Rahul Dravid?

So ,it’s for U to decide whether he is merely a wall or he is more than a wall ?He is a wall that scores fairly well in much better than our so-called star players in present team.

Okay.He may not be able to score runs, being out of form. But then like to ask U who is responsible for making Dravid trapped in this messy state of affairs ? Why is he being punished for the crime committed by the selectors ?

my dear Arvind,
even if the match against pak,ind were chasing a total of over 300 and at that time he wasted 103 balls for his 70 odd runs...and he was the one who has been held responsible for the downfall of gambhir n then raina, the only two guys who looked like they meant businees..so i guess u need 2 be a bit more informed abt it and not me.
secondly al the stats u hv shown are of those days when one cud nt hv imagined a side without dravid, sachin and ganguly.
after his cm bk agnst NZ dravid had a 45 balls 14 in the final agnst lanka he has a 58 balls 38,he nvr looked rotating the strike.
and for your knowledge i wud like to tell you to listen to the views of cricket experts as nowadays a good strike rate means a strike rate of around 77-80. a strike rate of less than 70 which dravid carried through the through the larger period of his career was supposed 2 b a decent one but not any more.
i feel you need 2 be a bit more careful with the statements you make and give a good thought before u put it.

and also..as u shown yr wide knowlge bt cricket by putting up records of early 2000 then my dear arvind i want 2 make u rmmbr that in 1980s we had quite a few players like kapil dev, sunil gavasakar, sandeep patil who did really well...shud v take them into this current indian line up owing 2 their gr8 rcods of 80s...certainly not.
i agree that dravid has doen a yomen’s service for indian cricket, but mate he is 36 now,may b his time is over...he is a champions and no denying 2 that fact...all we need is 2 treat him like a champion..which BCCI didn’t...

@ Sumit

I hope at least first think and then post your comments. You need not display your arrogance and lack of thinking ability while posting the comment.

In a mad rush to post the comment you forget that ” I had to display wide knowledge bt cricket” because U came up with a stupid remark that ”we don’t need a wall”..”we need sm1 who could keep the score board ticking”...Forget about the treatment meted out to Dravid by the selectors first let his so-called admirers learn to place his achievements in right perspective !!

You also forgot to read that I am not only with the decision of the selectors but also, unhappily, endorse their actions. However, one just cannot forget that it’s their foolhardiness that made Dravid trapped in all sorts of dilemmas.

Lastly, the records are not old enough to make U think of Kapil or Gavaskar ..It’s your arrogance that has let you remember Kapil and Gavaskar..

I am not here to display knowledge of cricket to likes of you nor am I debating the worthiness of Dravid as one day player. That should be absolutely clear to U.I had to rope in his statistics to merely show U that he is not just a wall but more than a wall who knows how to keep the score board ticking.Records were highlighted not in protest of his rejection but to merely annihilate your faulty perception that he is just a wall.

No need to remind me of the views of cricket experts of recent times.I am quite aware of the fact that how well some players with so-called high strike rate are playing in Indian team. It’s all about ”Allah Mehrbaan To Gadha Pehlwaan”

At present, I am not worried about how selectors are treating the ”Dravid”..I am worried how our so-called admirers of Dravid are reflecting over the worthiness of Dravid..haha..haha

Anyway, don’t be in two minds..I am with the decision of selectors-the bunch of jokers !!

Anyway,Happy Deepavali to you and your family ..

BCCA should take new tallents , who will definitly improve when given Chance , Seniors should not Dominate the Indian criket who want to play only just to get Commercial Ads. Mr Kapil Deo never rushed for the Adds at early stage of his entry.

Sorry It should be BCCI

I certainly agree with u Capt. that the younger guys should be given a chance but that chance should be based on talent or performance in the domestic arena and not on the regionalism. that would certainly help the cause.

In Limited Over matches tail enders hardly get chance to Play , Playing test criket and Domestic one has lot of difference, BCCI selectors try to give chance to seniors so that they may creat the Record , Some matches were lost as Seniors were not able to perform to the satisfaction of the Captain. We should feel ashamed when we play Sri lanka or Pakistan who have one tenth of India population, but without Political interference. they select best of the telents.
